Why We Exist – The Problem That We Help Solve:

Hunger in the United States: A Focus on California, Ventura County, and the Ojai Valley

Hunger is a widespread issue in the United States, affecting approximately 38 million people, or 10.5% of American households. Despite the country’s agricultural wealth, food insecurity persists due to factors such as income disparity, unemployment, and limited access to transportation. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted vulnerabilities in the food system, making it clear that more comprehensive solutions are necessary.

The Situation in California & Ventura County

California, while rich in agricultural resources, has over 4 million food-insecure residents, with Ventura County experiencing similar challenges. Despite the abundance of local agricultural products, many low-wage workers, including farmworkers, struggle to afford nutritious food. Rising housing costs in cities like Ventura and Ojai add to these struggles, making food accessibility even more difficult for many families.

Local Efforts in the Ojai Valley and Ventura

Community organizations such as Foodshare and the Community Action Partnership Program (CAPP) are vital in addressing food insecurity in Ventura County and the Ojai Valley. These groups provide direct assistance and help connect residents to government support programs like CalFresh. Additionally, initiatives like local community gardens and school meal programs play key roles in combating hunger.

Conclusion

Hunger in California, and specifically in Ventura County and the Ojai Valley, is an ongoing issue that affects many despite the region’s agricultural abundance. Collaborations among local organizations, policy changes, and community engagement are essential to combat food insecurity and ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.

Our Mission

Our mission is to eliminate hunger in the Ojai Valley and Ventura by connecting residents in need with nutritious food, promoting the importance of healthy eating, increasing self-sufficiency, and instilling hope. The Daily Bread – Food Pantry Program aims to ensure that food relief creates a meaningful and lasting impact in our community. We achieve this through two primary avenues: direct food distribution to those in need and connecting individuals with partner food programs.
