Poverty is more than hunger—it’s the daily struggle to afford gas, rent, utilities, clothing, and other basic necessities. In California and Ventura County, including the Ojai Valley, many individuals and families live one unexpected bill away from crisis. While food programs play a critical role, non-food-related needs often go unmet—and they can stand in the way of employment, education, and long-term stability.

That’s where Helping Hand steps in. A program of the Community Action Partnership Programs (CAPP), Helping Hand offers practical, personalized assistance that helps people overcome immediate challenges and move toward lasting change. We focus on providing a hand up—not a hand out—by supporting individuals in ways that promote dignity, confidence, and opportunity.

Types of Assistance We Offer:

• Transportation Support – Bus fare, gas cards, or minor car repairs so clients can get to work, school, or important appointments

• Work Clothing – From interview-ready attire to durable work gear like steel-toe boots

• Essential Services – Access to mailing addresses, internet, haircuts, and showers to support personal and professional well-being

• Childcare Support – Temporary babysitting so parents can attend interviews or job training

• Tax Assistance – Help navigating tax preparation and filing
